Inlays and Onlays

Lay claim on the smile you've always wanted

Dental inlays and onlays are used to restore decayed, cracked or damaged teeth when neither crowns or fillings are suitable – essentially, inlays and onlays are smaller than a crown but bigger than a filling. Both inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, composite resin or gold, but porcelain is the most popular choice as it looks very natural.
An inlay is like a filling but it sits within the cusps or bumps of the chewing surfaces of your tooth. An onlay is bigger than an inlay and it covers one or more cusps.

Inlays are used to repair teeth that have decay or damage within the cusps or bumps of the chewing surface of a tooth, and can also be used to replace old or damaged metal fillings. An inlay treatment is usually carried out over two appointments. On the first, an impression of the tooth is taken and temporary inlay is fitted. The impression is used to create an inlay which exactly matches your tooth, and this is then permanently fitted to your tooth in the second visit.

Onlays are bigger than inlays and are used to treat decay that extends to one or more cusps. They are placed much in the same ways as inlays and can provide a permanent solution to tooth decay in just two appointments. Onlays require only minimal removal of the tooth surface, and for this reason help to preserve the tooth’s structure. Because onlays save damaged teeth, they can also help to prevent the need for more extensive treatment such as crowns, bridges, and implants.
